Bass River Rod & Gun Club - May Newsletter

3 Hours Of Your Time

On May 3rd, we’ll be reviving a long time club tradition – Club Clean Up Day.

I am asking you to give 3 hours to get the club ready for the Spring season.

We have projects on all the outside ranges and roads, and we’ve got members in each area to lead the work. You can help on the archery range and stations, the outdoor range, the shotgun fields - we’re splitting wood, giving a fresh face to the fields and berms, moving clays, cutting back the road edges.

You don’t need any specialized equipment - bring some gloves, a rake, some loppers, weed whacker, or a leaf blower.

Clean Up Day is a great time to meet a few of our new members or see a longtime friend.

Saturday morning, 8:00AM - 11:00AM – May 3rd.

All shooting ranges will be closed until 11:30 am to allow us to work safely and to concentrate on the most important Club activity for that day.

Volunteer – Help – Commit – Have Fun - give 3 hours!

Thank you,

Dan Paige Sr.
President

Club Cleanup Day
Saturday May 3rd, 8:00AM-11:00AM

What Is This?

As I was leaving the club the other day, I came across a lone member who had grabbed a wheelbarrow, a shovel, and a rake, and by his own initiative was filling springtime potholes in the range road. That member just happened to be our club treasurer, Paul Heslinga. With his many hours of work committed to managing club finances, a career in finance, and family obligations, Paul saw a chore that needed doing and just did it - that, my friends, is a member. A member isn't just about paying your dues each year - being a member, in the truest sense of the word, is weaving yourself into our social fabric, and putting your shoulder to the wheel. Nothing happens at Bass River unless a member raises a hand and says, "this I will do".

You have a chance to raise your hand on May 3rd!

From 8:00AM – 11:00AM we’ll be holding an annual Club Clean Up Day.  We have projects on all the outside ranges and roads, and we’ve got members in each area to lead the work. You can help on the archery range and stations, the outdoor range, the shotgun fields - we’re splitting wood, giving a fresh face to the fields and berms, moving clays, cutting back the road edges. You don’t need any specialized equipment - bring gloves, a rake, some loppers, weed whacker, or a leaf blower.

If you’re a new member and need volunteer hours, this would be a great time to jump in – just show up at the main club house just before 8:00AM and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Conservation Camp Scholarship Available

Teens who like the outdoors will love Conservation Camp! Designed for girls and boys aged 13–17, the Massachusetts Junior Conservation Camp offers a hands-on curriculum focused on outdoor skills, conservation, and ethics. During the two-week overnight camp, teens can try new outdoor activities, improve their current skills, and meet like-minded peers. The MJCC will be held at the Moses Scout Reservation in Russell from August 3–15, 2025.

Campers gain a variety of skills during their two weeks at camp. Professionals from environmental agencies provide hands-on experiences and demonstrations on topics including wildlife, fisheries, forest fire control, and forest management. Experienced and enthusiastic outdoors men and women teach fishing, camping, wild foods, archery, and firearms shooting and safety. In addition, campers have the opportunity to earn certifications in Basic Hunter Education and Boating Safety.

Tuition is $1,150, but the members of Bass River Rod & Gun Club provide one scholarship to a child of a member, and if no member child is presented, we offer the scholarship to the community at large. If you’re interested, please contact Julie Robillard at (774) 279-6530, or email her at jrobillard35@comcast.net.

25 For 25
Building Legacy

Our Scholastic Shotgun Team continues to grow - we're serving nearly 20 young people on the team during the 2025 season.  Our goal, over time, is to raise enough capital in our endowment account, to enable the team to become self supporting in perpetuity.  To aid us in that, we're asking for 25 people, to make a recurring monthly donation of $25. This would give our team $7500 in donations, which would then be matched 100% by the MidwayUSA Foundation, yielding $15000 to the team endowment in 2025.

All donations to the MidwayUSA Foundation are tax deductible.

Any amount you choose will help us - from $5 a month, to $100 a month - so contribute an amount that's comfortable for you.

Click on the link below, then click on the link that says "DONATE NOW TO SUPPORT THIS TEAM", fill in an amount that you're willing to donate, click the box that says "Make This A Monthly Gift", fill in your information and follow the prompts to set up your payment.

If you would like to make a onetime gift, you can do that simply by entering an amount and filling in your personal information and payment method

Please lend a hand in creating legacy for our young shotgunners.

"Legacy is not what I did for myself. It's what I'm doing for the next generation."  - Vitor Belfort

Help Needed

“I learned to always take on things I’d never done before. Growth and comfort do not coexist.” - Ginni Rometty

Bass River Rod & Gun Club thrives with active member participation. Despite an expanding volunteer base, we face a common challenge - 80% of the work is done by 20% of our members. To realize our full potential, members' time, talents, and dues are essential.

We need your help in filling the following positions:

Donations Chair: this position coordinates the donations and scholarships provided by Bass River - schedules our blood drives - and coordinates our annual Veterans Shoot.

Wednesday Worker’s Chair: this position coordinates and supervises the work of our Wednesday Workers.

Club Historian: we're looking for someone who, over time and with the help of our older members, begin to compile the history and photographs of our club. If you enjoy history, and you have the time to work on this important project at your leisure, please contact Kevin York by clicking HERE.

To hear more about these positions, please email us by clicking HERE.

Range Orientation Program

In order to use the Indoor Range and the Outdoor Rifle and Pistol Ranges, Members must complete the Safe Range Orientation Program - it is in two parts. The Program is staffed by NRA Range Safety Officers who have been providing extra help and refresher instruction to our members. In the end, keeping the Bass River firing ranges safe is the best way to ensure the continuation of the Club into the future. Classes are offered each month, weather permitting.
