A Walk Around the Pond

Shooting too much? Fish not biting? Just too hot?

If you’re saying yes to any of these questions, how about a walk around Matthews Pond?

Here is a little history of the pond, as written by Deena Tolly in her “History of the Bass River Rod and Gun Club”:

A key founding father, Tom Matthews, served as the first Reservation Superintendent and played a decisive role in transforming the landscape of the Club. In 1942, under his guidance—and with the collective labor of many Club members—the dike was constructed to create the beautiful 50-acre spring-fed pond that remains a centerpiece of the property today.

The pond provides a breeding ground for waterfowl and related wildlife and was stocked with largemouth bass and perch. In recognition of his leadership and vision, the pond was later named “Tom Matthews Pond”.

Here are some pictures of the things you’ll find as you walk the trails around the pond, taken this week.

If you’re looking for something different, enjoy the pictures—then go experience it for yourself!

Sincerely,

Dan Paige Sr.

Club President

Range Closure Notice

Dear Club Members,

Please note that the Indoor Range will be closed for approximately four days next week while we install a dehumidification system, the final step in our mold remediation process.

The closure will begin Monday, August 3rd, and is expected to continue through at least Thursday, August 6th. During this time, the Indoor Range will be completely closed for equipment installation.

The Clubhouse will remain open as usual.  Only the Indoor Range will be closed.

Any activities scheduled during the closure have been canceled or moved to a later date.

The closure will begin at 6:00 AM on Monday and is expected to be completed by the end of the day Thursday, though the work may take longer.

We will send a follow-up communication once the work is complete.

Thank you for your patience as we complete this final step to reduce moisture in the Indoor Range.

Sincerely,

Dan Paige Sr.

President

Claybor Day

Claybor Day was created with several goals in mind:

  • To recognize the volunteers who keep our shotgun ranges humming—the Range Safety Officers, the members who mow the grass, maintain the machines, split the firewood, and load the targets. Without their dedication and hard work, there would be no shotgun sports at Bass River Rod & Gun Club.
  • To showcase our Scholastic Shotgun Team by integrating a squad of our young shooters into a competition alongside our club members. Just as  importantly, we wanted to instill a culture of service by encouraging team members and their parents to become the helping hands that make an event like this possible.
  • To conclude our annual team fundraiser with the raffle drawing, where we awarded more than $3,000 in prizes.

This year's Claybor Day met—and exceeded—all of those goals.

Thirty shooters took to the course, including a squad of five of our outstanding Scholastic Team members. Nearly two dozen parents, team members, and volunteers worked behind the scenes to ensure the event ran seamlessly. Most importantly, together we raised nearly $14,000 for the Bass River Scholastic Shotgun Team Endowment.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who donated raffle prizes, including Bass River Rod & Gun Club, Arthur Boujoukos, Paul Heslinga, David Lanci, John Mulak, Shaun Ruge, and Bob Tolley.

We also gratefully acknowledge Everett Boy and Paul Heslinga for their matching-fund pledges. Finally, a special thank you goes to David Lanci, whose generous sponsorship of the event catering ensured that every participant enjoyed a great meal while celebrating another successful Claybor Day.

Archery

Skip and I greatly appreciate the extra help we’ve gotten from members. We could not handle the 24 archers (including 12 new archers) we had last weekend (7/28) without their continued support.

We’re still looking for other instructors willing to be trained as USA Archery level 2 instructors.

Thanks
Bill DiNatale

      Volunteer

"I always wondered why somebody didn’t do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody."

      —Lily Tomlin

Bass River Rod & Gun Club thrives with active member participation. Despite an expanding volunteer base, we face a common challenge - 80% of the work is done by 20% of our members. To realize our full potential, members' time, talents, and dues are essential.

      Club Dinner

We need volunteers to assist with the monthly club dinner every third Friday of the month from 5 - 7 pm. No cooking required! If you're able to help, please contact Larry Lyford by clicking HERE.
